I am planning to upgrade the network cable in my house. I chose to use fiber optic cables instead of metal cables. I don't know whether to use a singlemode or a multimode cable.

Use a multimode cable for the home network. The singlemode cables are often used for long distances. Note that you must not mix singlemode and multimode cables.
