serial connection to LCD with HD44780

Is there a way to connect an LCD with HD44780 via RS232C without MCU?

yes, I have simple solution based three TTL cuircuits (UART and one 8-bit latch and one 4-bit latch) and one RS232C driver (MAX232C). Alternatively, an FTDI USB-serial-TTL circuit is possible for the USB port instead of MAX232C.
